Video clips that made me smile
Just along the way
1min 8secs - Arrival in Hanoi after long 12 hours on the hard benches. Expected to see a very busy city and to my surprise the city is pretty dead at 3:30am. Learned that traffic is so bad because everyone pretty much lives outside the city and commute to work.
2min 5secs - Edit clip of my experience of entering the Dark Cave in Phong Nha. A unique experience. We went really deep into the cave until we arrived at a very muddy area. When you sat down and tried to fully immerse yourself, you did not sink, you floated. To get there had to go through some very narrow passages. On the way back we turned off our helmet lights and that was interesting! At the end covered in mud, the zip line at the end was a good dunking to get rid of all the mud!!
1min 19secs - Again Chris Williams recommended Phong Nha and the Dark Cave. Slight detour from my trip northwards with a quick stop-over here. Hired a scooter and tried to capture the mountain scenery. Do not recommend traveling on a bike with camera and one hand on the steering wheel.
1min 15secs - On the train from Da Nang to Dong Hoi. About 45minutes out of the station climbed mountains by the coast. Some great views of the coast line and also showing what it is like traveling the lowest class on the Vietnam trains. On the "hard benches" with ordinary folk.
0min 49secs - Second day in Nha Trang ... did a walkabout of the town and ended up at the far North of the beach, decided to take this snippet to show what it is like. Actually the Southern part of the beach is better, this part is near mouth of the Cai River.
1min 45secs - After about 2 months of backpacing my trainers/sneakers, backpack and washbag were pretty dirty and sticky. This was a good time for them and me to get a good sea soaking. Found this pier which was a great place to soak up the sun a little bit and put everything to dry on the wooden boards. The sound is not very good as the GoPro camera is encased in waterproof plastic container, but what I said at the end was ... "not too bad!" 🙂
Laos
13min 26secs - This is what I said on my post on facebook at the time ..."Went on walk-about this morning... met a dog in village. Well he accosted me. bumped into 2x. licked my hand.. then followed me. Then he led (I got it after a couple of wrong turns!!)...and he took me for a walk all the way to khongyai beach. Here we are on the rocks together. Took video snapshots of him all the way. i let him lead the way. after a rest at the "beach restaurant" - he sat next to me. We came back he went to a back and in the village he went into a restaurant... and i asked them if it was their dog. it was. Will make a video edit of this with him "dog tired" on a nice cool restaurant floor. I think my 2nd highlight of this trip so far. will eat at that restaurant tonight to say hello!!!" Update was I did eat at the restaurant that evening and met a very nice french couple there as well and spent a few hours with them. An overall very good day.
1min 13secs - This is layer of the waterfall just from the top where you can enter a cave under the falling water. It is an exciting and unique experience because firstly it is technically "out-of-bounds" and sort of fenced off a couple of times. But everyone knows about it and goes to this level. The exciting thing is to go into the cave underneath the waterfall. It is quite small and claustrophobic if you do not like this sort of thing. I went in and then took this video of it. You can enter with holding your breath or going backwards face up while breathing. Once in .. not much there to be honest" But with a good group and clear waters, this is unique and good experience. In any other country this would be a zoo with tourists and probably not allowed to swim there.
1min 04secs - This is clip of 2nd day of the slowboat trip down the Mekong River, coming from the North into Laos. Off-season here but our boat was full. Can imagine that it is like this all the time during peak season. Going through the mountains and slight rapids I can imagine requiring skill and knowledge from the pilot. There are locals on-board near the front, but mainly Western and Chinese tourists. Nice couple of days and you get to know a few folks on the boat with this experience as well as overnight lodging in a local village.
Myanmar
4min 30secs - My "Indiana Jones moment" video". Ah man .. when I was editing this .. I am such a kid. And folks who have been there done that will say, yes you can climb up some of them. But i just off the bus. I was walking to my hotel, and I was blown away... the road less traveled and off the beaten track .. always more fun. 🙂
5min 00secs - "Derek's indiana jones moment part II" video. So after climbing up the temple. I continued to walk towards the rough direction of my hotel. There was a horse buggy .. really in the middel of nowhere. Aung Ko Myint and Bo-bo his horse. He knew I was a long way from any hotel ..and patiently negotiated me from 6000 to 4000 kyats (about $3.50USD) for a ride to the hotel. To be honest after about 10 mins .. it was a long way to walk! But a nice experience and would not have done this for the tourist tour. So worked out well.
6min 45secs - "Infovideo". A few options to travel north. Bus or train. Then train is a slightly slower sleeper or this one. Newer carriages from China I believer. Upper class was reclining seats. I was upfront. Not very busy train, but thought would capture what it was like while moving a "walk-about" from the back to the front of the train. Also to avoid filming people directly and some privacy .. so filmed from the back up
2min 43secs - "Infovideo". description on Youtube pretty much captures it. But the question I have now when I look at it, why was I the only guy in this taxi sitting in the middle. The "rounder-upper" ... not the driver, but the sort of conductor clearly stands at the back. but so did the other males. But it was a packed truck with one lady ill on the way. Chickens clearly for dinner under the seats. Not fun for me that part. But life.
2min 12secs - "bike-about-tour". Every city I travel through aim to do a "walk-about". Mawlamyine is quite a spreadhout city with a ridge/hill running through it. Also my hotel was nearer the airport than city center. So I organized a scooter taxi to take a quick tour. This clip is after visiting the airport, railway station and Uzina Pagoda. And we are now heading to the highest point on the ridge - View Point
4min 30secs - "infovideo". I am calling this an info video, as it tells you how much it costs for a foreigner coming to Yangon for a taxi from the Bus Terminal to the Bahan district. I did not come "planned" like finding out where the bus terminal was, how far it was from the hotel and how to get from the bus terminal to the hotel and cost. Come prepared .... a little
2min 11secs - "Nothing better to do video". Arrived day before and passed this pagoda, it looked really impressive at night and was all lit up. So decided next day to visit it. It is called the Shwe Taung Zar Pagoda. From entrance could see long corridor to main statue shrine. Thought would be cool for a 360 degree walk to the main statue ....
4min 45secs - "Infovid" - 2nd of 3 part leg to Yangon from Kawthaung. Expected journey time 6 hours. The roads are pretty rough south of Mawlamyine... minibus the best option. Here is a short video of a feel of the experience, how much it costs and some tips
Thailand
1min 27secs - "Infovideo". Made my crossing to Myanmar from Thailand at Ranong. This I found out was a good place where foreigners living or working further south cross the border to renew their visas. I made a full video of this crossing, as I did not expect this and will put a nicer one together shortly. But this one gives you a feel of what it is like, what it costs and what you need to have prepared. Might do more of these in future...
25min 1secs - "nothing better to do video" - Every morning I get woken up by the rooster next door. I think, this I need to share, and a unique opportunity time test my new 360 degree camera ... would the rooster outlast my Ricoh Theta S?
5min 39secs - 1st GoPro video with simple 2 clip edit. Music coming from public speakers in the courtyard of the temple site. For details behind the video, please see the post here.
34 secs - After a long 11.5 hour bus ride from KL and crossing the border to Thailand, I arrive in Hat Yai Thailand. the biggest city in the south of Thailand. I am tired, and knew that I would arrive late. So I booked a Hotel for the night, here is a clip taken from my Olympus TG4 Tough Camera. Better at night than GoPro
